About Cowes

Cowes is a harbour town that gives its name to the world’s oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, held in August every year. It is divided into East and West Cowes by the River Medina.

In medieval times, the two towns were called Shamblord. Osborne House was designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria as their summer home. It was completed in 1851, and is now open to the public.

The largest Union Jack Flag in the world is painted on the hangar doors of the Venture Quays boatyard. It was originally done to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, and was refreshed for the London Olympics in 2012.
