The Intricate Life of a Chartered Surveyor from, you guessed it, a Chartered Surveyor!
As the Guardian said in 2009, “no job in Britain is more difficult to explain than that of a chartered surveyor”. 8 whole years later and we are still no easier to explain!
Although we may look smart in our expensive suits and matching ties we do not live the life of luxury like you may believe. A chartered surveyor does not have a typical look, character or accent as we really do come from varied backgrounds. One thing that is common across the board, is that our jobs start early in the morning when most people are resting because we have to travel, and by travel, I mean seriously travel.
What Do We Actually Do?
Most people ask what we actually survey when we arrive at their property and although this is easily answered with ‘everything’ it does not cover your trampoline in the back garden. Although there are numerous surveyors all over the UK taking part in surveying certain areas of land for example, mining land, the channel tunnel, rich estates and normal public roads, there are surveyors that simply find faults in buildings and advise on how to repair them. In fact, you are unlikely to find a plot of land or property that has not been previously surveyed by someone in the trade and in some cases by me!
Being A Chartered Surveyor
Like many other chartered surveyors, I have always had a passion for the details in buildings and how they can be improved. As I come to explain throughout this blog the importance of a chartered surveyor, you will soon realise that it isn’t really a job but actually a description of a set of skills that are tailored to suit everyone’s needs.
You will also discover that a chartered surveyor is actually a vital necessity to move forward with building leases, property valuations and so on, meaning we are basically indispensable. Who would have thought it?
